What the numbers can and cannot tell you
A call report is a balance sheet and an income statement, filed by the credit union itself and checked by its examiners over time. It tells you how big a credit union is, how much capital it holds against losses, how its loans are performing and whether it is growing or shrinking. It does not tell you its rates, its fees, or whether its branch staff are any good.
The figures that matter most to a member are on every page: the net worth ratio, the share of loans 60 or more days past due, and membership growth over the year. A falling membership with rising late loans is worth a second look; one bad quarter is not.
Questions people ask
How do I know if a credit union is financially healthy?
Start with the net worth ratio, its capital as a share of assets. NCUA's prompt corrective action rules treat 7% or more as well capitalized. Then look at the share of loans 60 or more days late against similar-sized credit unions. Each credit union page shows both.
Is my money insured at a credit union?
At a federally insured credit union, NCUA's Share Insurance Fund covers deposits up to $250,000 per member for each ownership category, the same limit as FDIC insurance at banks. A few state-chartered credit unions are privately insured instead; their pages say so.
How current are these numbers?
Credit unions report as of the end of each calendar quarter and NCUA publishes the data about two months later. Each page names the quarter its figures come from.
Is Credit Union Ledger part of NCUA?
No. It is an independent site that republishes NCUA's public data. Nothing here is endorsed by NCUA or by any credit union.
